Our Story

Whilst living in Germany and then Australia, with travels through North & South America and Asia in between, Paul Swaffield, developed a passion for hunting out incredible beers.  His obsession to find great beer has extended his search all around the globe, and that search for perfection never ends.

Back home in Sussex, Paul began brewing beers like those that had inspired him.

The goal was simple: Create exceptionally good beers.

From the outset Paul wanted to build something more than a brewery.  Based on the belief that beer can bring people together to socialise and have fun, Bestens Brewery aims to help and serve its community.

The Pilot Brewery

In early 2017 the pilot brewery was completed, housed in a picturesque barn loft in Cuckfield and comprising of a 1/2 barrel (80-litre) brewhouse, pro-specification fermenters and conditioning tanks. The pilot brewery is where we  perfected our core range of small batch beers.

The beers currently in our core range are:

  • West Coast IPA

  • South Pacific Pale Ale

We now produce a variety of limited edition beers throughout the year as well.

Our Brewery

In the summer of 2018 we moved to Bestens HQ, our new brewery, shop & tap bar.  Nestled at the back of the Church Lane Estate, in Lower Beeding, West Sussex, our 1BBL brewhouse is being worked hard to share our beers with you all.  We currently can and keg our beers on site, with deliveries going out across Sussex and the South-East.  Check the Tap Room page for current opening times.

The Journey

We believe that great beer can make great things happen, therefore, Bestens is more than a brewery.  We will be working in partnership with local charities and community groups to organise events and fundraising initiatives to give something back.  We will commit to making a donation from the profit of each beer sold to our community fund, this will then be shared amongst those projects and charities we have partnered with.  Look out for Team Bestens and visit the More Than a Brewery page to get involved.
